By buying and selling ships you can become immensely rich without having to leave port. To accomplish this wait until the prices take a dip and then buy as many ships as you can afford. Wait until the prices go up again, at which point you sell. After a while the profits begin to accumulate and you can buy bigger ships. After a further while you can not only buy the biggest ships, but because your status increases every time you buy a brand new ship, you can also obtain a loan to buy even more ships. You can also accomplish this quicker by stopping the game-time, then check the prices, exit the store, Go back in without starting the clock, check the prices again, repeat until the prices are right. Within one day, you can be king.
