| Dave began his computing career in 1983/84 when, after working for Timex
in Scotland, he used his redundancy money to buy himself an A1000. (Timex
themselves had been producing ZX Spectums which Dave had used and programmed
on.) Whilst studying Computer Science he designed and programmed his first
game, Menace, in around a year of his spare time. He approached Psyclapse
(Psygnosis) at the Sep 88 Computer Show and they agreed to publish the game.
And so, development company, DMA design, was born - though at the time it
only really consisted of David, himself, and Tony Smith
(who had worked freelance on the gfx for Menace).
During this period he was still training in Microsystems at Dundee College
of Technology so all his programming work was done at night in his bedroom.
However, he made the difficult (but now proven correct choice) to bin his
degree and concentrate on game development. That said, due to his his (and
DMAs) impact in the computer games field he was later awarded an Honarary
Degree by Abertay University (the renamed Dundee College of Technology).
Dave is on record as stating that his next game after Blood Money was to
have been related to the introductory sequence for that game (where the meteorites
tumble towards you). As far as I know this never happened but given his next
credited game was the classic Lemmings and then its sequels can we complain?
